Assembling solutions

Once the targeted goals and opportunities are finalized, we enter our D3 phase: Develop, Design, and Demonstrate.

Following Identify, Whitman Designs uses this phase to look at the the targets selected and Develop a range of possible solutions. Examining multiple approaches produces a dynamic method of problem solving that we find best facilitates the evolution of the most elegant and efficient outcomes. Each potential solution is examined and rated by how beneficial it is to the project. We determine this by looking at a number of factors, like what it solves, its feasibility, estimated time to execute, and more. We use these factors to define the 'rate of return' each solution has with respect to the project goals in order to select the most promising candidates to carry through the Design and Demonstrate phases. This is where having a multi-industry and interdisciplinary approach truly shines and avoids many pitfalls of more traditional methods - all before pen touches paper and resources are spent on physical goods.

The Design phase is where the chosen rough concepts and solutions are refined into something that can be produced, analyzed, improved, and ultimately implemented. We create CAD models, begin deep investigation into material selection, begin reaching out to potential vendors and manufacturers to establish baseline prototyping and production costs, and much more. This gives everyone involved in the project a feel for how the solution will be executed in a virtual and flexible environment while also providing a sense of cost and production schedules. Essentially, we generate and gather all the information and resources necessary to execute the solution through the Demonstrate and Evaluate phases without spending physical assets, thus keeping budget low, timelines short, and success rates high.

Following finalization of the designs, we Demonstrate the solutions to show that they are functional, effective, marketable, and manufacturable. We produce physical models, gen-one prototypes, and other first-article functioning goods to analyze and ensure design intent has been met.

The D3 phase is incredibly rewarding for both us and our clients. We pour an extraordinary amount of creative effort into the project which allows us to push the limits of the design. Upon completion, you receive a full review and report of the project status to-date, as well as an action plan to carry the project into Evaluate.

While all four phases of our IDEA™ method are practiced everywhere in our business, Develop is particularly relevant to product development, design, usability and aesthetics, prototyping, market strategy, and device production.
